  The Military Structure of Gilbezber

The City of Gilbezber is ruled without question by Doctor Beak, who resides in the hospital at its center. Doctor Beak holds absolute command over all of his subjects, though he usually chooses to remain in the hospital to conduct experiments, leaving the administrative work to the leaders of his staff.

Beak's three head nurses: Nurse Freedyl, Nurse Blissley, and Nurse Crimmings, perform most of the functions involved in running the city. They direct the other nurses and keep personal tabs on Beak's most important projects that he himself does not supervise. They have authority over other branches of Gilbezber's personnel, such as the military, but they generally do not exercise such power. The only military unit that they personally command is Beak's personal guard, which they generally have only guarding the Doctor himself or the most important operations.

Below the head nurses are Beak's regular nurses, which, like all of his servants, can be created by the Doctor from ambience and therefore have fluctuating and generally easily-replenishable numbers. The nurses monitor most of Beak's projects. They record the effects of various viruses and plagues on those afflicted by them, release plagues upon various worlds and chart the paths that the diseases spread along, collect souls for the doctor, collect debts owed, sell plagues to interested buyers, and perform most of the clerical work in Gilbezber.

The citizens of Beak's lands are considered the property of their administrators, and they are often used to test Beak's latest viruses for their effects. Citizens generally try to keep a low profile and stay out of the way of the various daemons who could kill them.

Beak's military is commanded by Plague General Illurch, who directs both its offensive and defensive branches. Illurch is a keen tactician, and he is well versed in using Beak's creations in various methods of biological warfare.

The Legion of Gilbezber is the primary army of the city, and its upper officers report directly to Illurch. The legion is used for attacking various worlds that Beak declares must be wiped of life, and they often harvest vast quantities of souls for the Doctor to use in powering the city. The legion also possesses many trained assault beasts that are more fearsome and varied than the heavy support for most forces. They were created in the labs of the Black Covenant, and, while they wildly attack their foes, they have been designed so that they never turn on their own side's forces. Similar to the Legion of Gilbezber is the Plague Legion, a second army of Beak's, which uses many more biological weapons in combat. The soldiers of both armies have their faces obscured by gas masks, and they carry guns tipped with serrated bayonets.

The other divisions under Illurch's control serve more specialized purposes. The cleansers were created to be the first troops into opposing territory and the last troops out. They wear special, solid-white hazmat suits that are alchemically augmented to resist the blows of most weapons, and they carry special guns that project columns of white fire at targets. The cleansers are responsible for eliminating any holy or magical wards that might either stave off the demons or cure the diseases that Beak's forces spread, and they are feared by mage kingdoms for their abilities to break the enchantments of even highly adroit mortal casters with ease.

Below Illurch is Watch Commander Gribsbick, who controls the Gilbezber Watch. The watch patrols the city of Gilbezber and enforces Beak's decrees with an iron fist. The watch is a defensive army, and it is almost never mobilized unless the city itself is under attack.

Beak's forces contain many lesser doctors, who form the Black Covenant. The Black Covenant researches new diseases, creates guard and assault beasts in its facilities' spawning vats, and also plies for the souls of mortals. The Black Covenant doctors, though powerful daemonic plague doctors in their own rights, are entirely inferior to and subservient to Beak. Below the doctors of the covenant are the daemonic Plague Engineers, who are responsible for tending to the vats of plaguestuff and creating new diseases. Promising plague engineers are occasionally promoted to be doctors of the covenant if their work is consistently excellent for long periods of time or if a doctor has been killed without Beak directly creating a replacement.

Outside of Gilbezber, Beak's forces have many bases. The Black Covenant, Beak's nurses, or the Outer Guard generally manage these locations. One of the most prominent facilities in Beak's outer holdings is called the Eastern Branch Compound. The Eastern Branch is run by Vis-Doctor Gebsnorn, a plague doctor who was not from Beak's Black Covenant. Beak distrusts Gebsnorn and has nurses monitoring the facility, but Beak also realizes that Gebsnorn alone cannot hope to wrest control of the empire from him. Till the time that he needs to deal with Gebsnorn comes, Beak is quite content in allowing the other doctor to conduct his research, which provides Beak with many new weapons.

Following Beak's oath of fealty to Naria and the Second Dark Empire, he received a group of Irrindil troops on loan from her. Beak finds these forces to be highly useful and is glad to broaden the scope of his forces.

Beak is constantly working on new projects, and his forces continually increase in both scope and strength. It is highly likely that his newer projects will lead to even more divisions and forces being created within the ranks of Gilbezber.
