Background-

Maleficus was created within a void of pure darkness. He alone dwelt in this void, one with the darkness around him. Maleficus dwelt in the darkness for years, simply waiting. Eventually he tired of his solitary state, and he sought to leave him realm. The void around him complied to his wishes, and a portal to another world was formed. Maleficus, in the form of a living cloud of darkness, flowed through the portal and possessed the first body he came across.

The body was that of Silandur, a priest who had been trying to summon forth his own dark god, a being which did not, in fact, exist. The other worshippers followed Maleficus, believing him to be the incarnate essence of their deity, an assumption the demonic entity did nothing to discourage. Silandur Maleficus gathered his forces and began to take over all of the worlds they could reach, transporting his armies from planet to planet in spheres of demonic energy. The dark crusade was going well until Maleficus's ever-expanding legions reached the Isuurian Empire, a world-spanning collective of mystics who worshipped holy trees, which were called the Lifewood Trees. The Isuurians were well-versed in fighting demonic foes and stalled Maleficus's expansion abruptly. Maleficus himself travelled from the world he first conquered to the distant galaxy of the Isurrian homeworld, and he began his personal war with their forces. Though he decimated their astral navy, laid waste to countless worlds of theirs, slaughtered their mistics, and burned away their trees, he did not escape his numerous battles unscathed, finding that weapons made from the wood of their holy trees could actually harm his body, a feat which no other weapon could do. Maleficus managed to drive the Isurrians back to their homeworld, changing bodies several times in the process, discarding one for another each time his body became sufficiently wounded by the Issurians' weapons. The Holy Council of Lifekeepers, in one final desperate bid to ward off their foe, gathered together the energy from all of the holy trees across the world, sending it in one blast at their enemy. Their plan, fortuitously for them, bore fruit. Maleficus's body was destroyed, and his worshippers, lacking his power to travel between worlds, became fractured and seperated from one another, causing the empire to fall apart. In addition to the loss of his body, Maleficus also suffered the loss of his sword, a blade of pure darkness which destroyed all that it touched save its wielder.

Though his body was destroyed, Maleficus's spirit lived on. Maleficus, seeking to avoid further confrontation with these foes in his weakened, bodiless state, travelled to a seperate dimension. For many years he went from world to world, maintain a low profile while regathering his strength. Once most of his strength had returned, Maleficus sought to recover his sword, locating the world on which it could be found and then travelling to it. There he possessed the body of a wanted criminal named Kandrin. Maleficus was not, however, the first to find the deadly blade. A madman named Xandre had obtained the blade of destruction and was using it in a plan to annihilate all known creation. Maleficus, not revealing his true nature, joined with a band of heroes who were seeking to kill Xandre in order to avenge a slain ally. Maleficus and the others confronted the nihilistic swordsman on an interdimensional isle called the Fulcrum of Desolation, and they engaged in a war with his troops. Xandre attempted to use the blade to blast the heroes into nothingness, but Maleficus simply called for it and it flew to his hand. Xandre, not dissuaded by the loss of the sword, called upon the powers of the endbringer to destroy his foes. Oracle, who had prophecized Xandre's loss in the battle, intervened and silenced his calls. Time froze around all save Oracle and Xandre, and the seer destroyed the bladesman. Time returned to normal for Maleficus and his companions, who, while glad to have won the battle, sought to repair the destroyed parts of creation.

The group announced its plan to gather the elemental crystals, which, if brought together, would grant their possesser the ability to create and destroy worlds. Maleficus, seeking the powers of the crystals, decided to remain with the group. The adventurers fought against elemental lord after elemental lord, faltering only in their conflict with the Lord of Earth. The sovereign of plants and the ground was a cunning foe, and he managed to pick off all of the group members save Maleficus, who, being a being of void, was able to survive the earth lord's attempts to cast him from existance. Maleficus and the Lord of Earth entered into an epic duel, which lasted hours with Maleficus slowly gaining ground against his foe. The Lord of Earth eventually surrendered the crystal to Maleficus, who used it to revive his fallen companions while the earthen one made his escape. The group then went on to gain the remaining two crystals. The Lord of Earth attempted to destroy the physical bodies of the heroes while they drifted in the Lord of Darkness's nightmare realm, but Maleficus managed to pull the earth lord into the dark domain, returning the heroes to the corporeal world and severing the tenuous connection to the nightmarish land where the earth lord was now trapped.

With all of the crystals gathered, Maleficus siezed them from the group and opened a portal to the distant world of Issuria. Maleficus used the power of the crystals to unmake the planet as the descendants of the elder druids attempted to use the lone Lifewood Tree, which had been grown from a seed and was still in an immature state, to defeat him. Both Maleficus's body and the world of Issuria were destroyed. Maleficus, exultant in having finally destroyed the one substance which could kill him, possessed one of the members of the group he had been adventuring with. In an act of sacrifice, she cast a spell which was supposed to destroy her, trying to eliminate the entity which was switftly gaining control of her body and mind.

Unbeknownst to her, the spell actually transported its caster to the distant Nightmare Realm. Maleficus, warring with the soul of the girl he had possessed, an individual prophecized by the Oracle to be able to ascend and become a goddess, was expelled from her body and took the shell of a nearby man who was being tormented for his crimes in life. The two battled for many days until a third force entered the battle- The Lord of Earth; the ephemeral pocket dimension that the Lord of Darkness had created merged, upon his death and the removal of the crystal, with the greater Nightmare Realm (not to be confused with the location of the same name ouside the Barrier). Maleficus scoffed at the Lord of Earth, who no longer possessed his crystal. The lord, who possessed complete control over all plant life, smiled, created a spear of lifewood, and pierced through Maleficus's heart.

Maleficus, disembodied once more, fled from the area, and not even the lifewood weapons summoned by the Lord of Earth seemed to be able to permenantly strike him down as he fled. Maleficus, seeking to build another army, possessed the most able body he could find, that of a hero named Zlaedon. Maleficus, travelling through the demon realm and searching for potential allies, encountered a girl named Naria Zalderos, who held a similar goal: the establishment of a centralized empire of darkness which would span the known dimensions. Maleficus and Naria swiftly became close associates, and Naria made him the second-in-command of the combined armies of the newly forged Dark Empire. The empire grew, and, as time progressed, began drawing up plans with a war to defeat the Celestial Lord and to raze the holy bastion of the Celestial Realm, which stood as one of the few credible threats to the now massive Dark Empire. The forces of the lower realms laid siege to the celestial kingdom, but the betayel of the Demon King, who attempted to claim the entire Dark Empire as his own just as the forces began to march on the Celestial Realm, managed to weaken the previously unified forces of darkness enough that they failed in their ultimate goal. While Malburgeon managed to kill the Demon King, Maleificus successfully breached the gates of the Celestial City, split the goddess Sereyn asunder, and killed countless celestials, and the daemonic legion managed to drive the city's defenders back into the palace of the Celestial Lord, the Dark Empire, with many of its demon reinforcements tied up in the civil succession war that engulfed the Demon Realm, was not able to muster enough of an army to finish the defeat of its collected adversaries. Maleficus, who could not be killed despite the efforts of the Celestial Lord's greatest generals and allies, was cast back into the void. The celestials sealed him away, preventing his realm from being re-opened without significant magical expenditure and carefully prepared counter-rituals.

Imprisoned in the void, Maleficus now waits and watches the worlds from his dark domain, silently awaiting the day he breaks free from the seals that bind him and claims dominion over the countless dimensions ripe for the harvest.
